Pep Talk: I Hate People

On a daily basis I hear people say, “I hate everyone, people suck, humans are the worst..”.

I am guilty of saying it more than I care to admit, because in the animal rescue world you see such horror, it’s easy to feel this way about humans.

Then, I snap out of it and remember in order to help anyone, any species, anyone on the outskirts of society, and especially those marginalized by society, you must love people!

What an absurd statement you say right?! YOU MUST LOVE ALL PEOPLE!

When you’re in a place where you see the worst of our society, it’s easy to become desensitized to people’s actual suffering. I’m sure you have heard the saying: “Hurt people, hurt others”.

This I promise is true, but they also fail to realize they hurt themselves in the process.

So what is my point of this pep talk? My point is this: You must LOVE people, all people, even those who may have decided they dislike you. Those that may have hurt you, those that cut you off on your way to work, those that snap at you, those who judge you, those that talk only about themselves.

You must love the neighbor whose dog shit on your lawn. You must love the neighbor who is addicted to drugs, or neglects their kids. You must love the police that pulls you over for speeding, you must love the person standing at the check out mumbling.

Why? Simple: You can’t change anyone, but you can change the way someone feels about themselves.

In changing someone’s opinion of themselves, you change the world.

My method is simple.  It is so simple, I challenge you to try it. Say this to yourself or out loud every morning and night over the next 21 days or so.

1) Just for today, do not worry.

2) Just for today, do not anger.

3) Honor your parents, teachers, and elders.

4) Earn your living honestly.

5) Show gratitude to every living thing.

Change is hard for people. But I promise you this. As Wayne Dyer said, “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”

Don’t be afraid to try a new way of thinking, or doing. Time is short. Meditate if only for 5 minutes on the 5 above statements derived from Reiki.

In love, light, and kindness,

Diane
